Memphis gearing up for 2019 season in typical southern summer heat

www.gotigersgo.com MEMPHIS, Tennessee – In the day before the first off day of camp, Mother Nature gave the Tigers their first test of the season while in shells. After moderate weather on Sunday in the first day in shells, the heat was cranked up for practice four, prepping the Tigers for their season opener at the end of the month. But Memphis Head Coach Mike Norvell stressed that the work needed to go on.

“You only get 25 practices before your first game and you will probably get 17 or 18 before we break camp, so every day matters, every day is an evaluation,” he said. “I’m really pleased with what I’m seeing and am really excited with the guys we have. Now we just have to clean it up and continue to push install situations and become a smart football team.”

Monday marked the final day in NCAA-mandated shells-only gear, but even though the team can go full pads beginning on Wednesday, after a scheduled off-day Tuesday, don’t expect Memphis to don full pads often this early in camp.

“(Going full pads) is not going to change much.

We really don’t want guys on the ground here in fall camp. We’ll have a couple of scrimmages where we’ll go full and tackle, but even that, when you’re in this time of year, you’ve got to be smart,” Norvell said.

But he also added “our practices are physical. In shells, we make sure that we are fitting up, we are getting in the right positions to make tackles, to make blocks, those are things that we’ve got to be great on.”

The team had an afternoon off Tuesday before resuming practice Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will also add the challenge of Tigers finishing summer school, as full summer session final exams are set for Friday.

Saturday, Memphis fans can get their first look at the 2019 roster at the team’s annual Fan Fest event. This year’s event has moved back to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Admission and parking are free and events run from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Fans are asked to enter the stadium through the Tiger Lane towers and Gate Three, where the equipment sale will be set up. The Pronto Pup concession stand will also be open.

After the practice on the field, the Tigers’ coaches and players will be available for autographs for 20 minutes. Some of the remaining open seats still available for season tickets will also be marked at the event.
