I don’t eat breakfast very often. Lunch is usually my thing. But Cat really wanted waffles with pecans for breakfast this past weekend. Knowing that I’m never going to agree to go to the chain Waffle House, Cat suggested that we try something Elvis themed since this week is Elvis Week in Memphis. Our initial impulse was to go to The Arcade in Memphis where Elvis is known to have been a regular.

We were on our way to the Arcade when I remembered that there was a new breakfast eatery in Marion. I thought it would be a better idea to try the one in Marion and write a review rather than going to the Arcade.

Cat didn’t put up any fuss and we both were looking forward to giving it a try.

I thought it might be a bit crowded on a late Sunday morning but we were able to get seated pretty quickly.

The menu at Waffle & Pancake House has a pretty complete range of standard breakfast food items that you would find in any greasy spoon or breakfast food chain – eggs, waffles, pancakes.

So that was encouraging.

I also noticed that they also offer lunch and dinner items on the back of the menu as well.

Cat was ecstatic when she saw that they had chicken and waffles ($7.95) on the menu. There’s nothing better than being able to order breakfast food along with some good old southern comfort food. They also offered the option of adding toppings as well ($1.50 extra) so Cat ordered hers with pecans. But that’s where her excitement ended. The waffles came out and did not have any pecans on them. And to her horror and mine, the chicken was three frozen – yes you read that right!- frozen chicken strips. Come on!

You have got to be kidding me! “This is not what it looked like in the picture on the menu,” Cat said. Cat was expecting nice pieces of fresh breaded homestyle chicken and not these wimpy frozen monstrosities. No decent diner would ever put that across as chicken and waffles, that’s for sure. Although the waffle looked like it was a good size fluffy Belgian waffle, it cast some doubt as to whether it too was frozen or cooked from scratch. “It’s only okay,” Cat said.

My experience was much better. I ordered a meat lovers omelet ($6.95) which has bacon, sausage, ham, and melted cheese inside.

I also added a side of hash browns which was an extra $1.50 and a glass of milk ($1.79). I thought the omelet was pretty good. It was like others I had tried in the past. It had plenty of meat and cheese and I left plenty full. I was not happy though when I found out that they charged me an extra $1.79 for a refill on my milk. Heck, for that price I could have stopped at the market and bought a whole gallon of milk for that price. But that was my only complaint.

Our bill came to about $24. They did take a $1.50 off for the pecans that Cat never got. The bill came to a little over $25 and with a tip it cost $29 for the two of us to eat breakfast.

I checked the menu prices at IHOP and Waffle and Pancake House’s prices are pretty close. However, I have to agree with Cat that I don’t think I will be coming back anytime soon or recommending it, and it has nothing to do with the fact that they left off Cat’s pecans. But seriously guys… frozen chicken tenders?!?! The breakfast was only average. “We could have gone to Cracker Barrel and gotten better food,” Cat said.
