Veteran anglers share secrets to successful fishing trips

From the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission

www.agfc.com Guide Mike Siefert (left) keeps enjoying a great largemouth bass bite at Millwood Lake these days, but he warns anglers of two things: the lake is being drawn down for both the planting of millet near the shoreline for waterfowl season and for some repairs on the lake; and two, anglers better start early because the fishing slows to a crawl by 10 a.m., he says. Bass are heading for cooler depths when the sun gets up. But before that, they’re going after jigging spoons in Little River behind primary points. “We are vertical-jigging chrome, a hammered Cordell, or Kastmaster or Johnson half- to three-quarter-ounce jigging spoons in chrome/ blue, chrome/chartreuse or solid chrome,” he said.

Buzzbaits and frogs are also working early. Crappie remain on fire there, too, he said.

As for some other highlights around the state:

• The word from Lake Catherine is that bream are excellent (and don’t forget, the full moon is Friday night). They’re also excellent at Lake Nimrod, where also one of the better crappie bites will be found if you use a Bandit 200 in 4-6 feet depth. Bass and catfish are also at their best right now at Nimrod, according to Andrews Bait Shop & More.

• Bream are excellent as well at Horseshoe Lake in eastern Arkansas, according to guide Ronnie Tice.

If the bream ease up, you’ll find the catfish in peak form, he said.

• Catfish are excellent at Lake Conway, according to Bates Field and Stream in Mayflower.

• Also, note that the AGFC Black Bass Program recently did some electro fishing at Lake Monticello, which is being drained for repair work, and a good number of bass were transferred from there to Cane Creek Lake at Cane Creek Lake State Park near Star City. Remember, too, that there are no limits on sport fish at Lake Monticello while it is drawn down.
