West Memphis earns superior rating in competition

WM School District The Academies of West Memphis marching band got a superior rating this past Tuesday night in the Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association Region 4 Marching Band Assessment in Searcy.

The superior rating (First Division) was one of only six given out of the 14 high school bands which competed in the event. The other school marching bands represented were Carlisle, Des Arc, Palestine-Wheatley, Helena-West Helena, Stuttgart, Riverview, Lonoke, Bald Knob, Wynne, Beebe, Marion, Searcy and Cabot.

The other grades handed out to the field of 14 included Second Division, Third Division and Fourth Division.

“Second Division is excellent,” said AWM band director Randal Box. “Third Division is considered good and very rarely do they ever give out Fourth Divisions, which is considered poor.” Box said the superior rating came on the band’s strongest performance of the year. BAND

“They performed better than they’ve performed all year long,” Box said of his 112-member band. “We hope to continue that trend this weekend in Paragould.”

Box’s band will perform this Saturday in the Paragould McDonald’s Marching Invitational. Twenty bands will compete in Paragould.

“We had good contributions from all sections of the band,” Box said of the Searcy event. “The brass, the woodwinds, percussion and the color guard. They all did their best show of the year.”

Box also said the color guard was particularly effective, in the judges’ opinion.

“They add a real sense of it being a performance,” Box said of the color guard. “The band executed all of their responsibilities at a very high level.”

The band is led by the leadership team of Andrea Tennison, Miller Kearney, Anthony Boyd, Trevor Trevino, J’Kia Jeffries, Priscyla Davis, Aelxandra Speak, Tyler Woodard, Demarus Davison, Damiayah Barrett,
