“Twig” to be indcuted into UCA Hall of Fame

Former Blue Devil boss racks up another honor

WM School District He coached the two greatest high school basketball teams ever in the state and those teams set the state record for most consecutive wins.

West Memphis' Bill Terwilliger continues the city's run on Hall of Fame spotlight when he is inducted into the University of Central Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame this weekend. Terwilliger played basketball for the school when it was known as State Teachers College from 1958-62.

'It's going to be a great honor,' the man known locally as 'Twig' said. 'I was more of a role player there. I rebounded, played good defense and got the ball to the stars.'

Terwilliger will be reunited with some of his Bear teammates, including Charlie Eagle, who chided the former Blue Devil basketball coach about his induction at UCA.

'He told me, 'you know Bill, you were just a role player. You're getting inducted on your coaching record.' I guess he's right.'

Terwilliger, who attended Thursday night's 2016 West Memphis Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony, will attend a social event tonight in Conway, followed by a brunch on Saturday before the main induction event on Saturday night.

Terwilliger was an inaugural inductee last year into the West Memphis Sports Hall of Fame and he was inducted into the Arkansas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006.

Terwilliger coached the Blue Devils from the fall of 1970 until 1984. His 197980 and '80-'81 clubs won 60 straight games and claimed two state championships with two future NBA lottery picks in Keith Lee and Michael Cage.

High school sports pundits across the state still consider those two teams the very best in Arkansas history.
