The West Memphis and Marion animal shelters were the recipients of some much-needed funds recently thanks to the “Give Me Shelter” Poker Run.

The funds, totaling $2,070 will be split evenly between the two cities’ shelter programs. This year’s Poker Run included five stops: The West Memphis Animal Shelter, Marion Animal Shelter, Pampered Pets, Ethel’s Old Airport Club, and the Arkansas Greyhound Kennel Association & Mid-South Greyhound Adoption Association.

The Poker Run was held Saturday, Oct. 29, and included not only the ride, but also a number of other festivities, including a live auction, a barbecue lunch and a pool tournament.

Gordon Floyd, one of the Poker Run’s organizers, said the group is already eyeing their next big event, a “Bikes 4 Tykes” bicycle drive for the upcoming Christmas season.

“Last year, we were able to get 103 bikes for local kids,” said Floyd. “This year, we want to surpass that.” Anyone interested in being part of the “Bikes 4 Tykes” effort is invited to contact Floyd at (901) 574-2448, stop by Ethel’s Old Airport Club on Highway 70, in West Memphis, or call (870) 735-9270.
