Offensive woes early sink Lady Devils

Falling behind early, the West Memphis Lady Devils could not complete a comeback against Greene County Tech

WM School District PARAGOULD — Another recurring trend haunted the West Memphis Lady Devils last Friday night at Greene County Tech.

Greene County Tech jumped out to a 10-0 lead, hitting on its first five shots from the field, and the Lady Devils didn't hit their first field goal until 4:27 was left in the second quarter.

It all added up to a 56-45 loss to Greene County Tech.

The Lady Devils have been there before.

Two weeks earlier at Valley View they missed their first 15 shots from the field and Valley View jumped out to a 22-1 lead before going on to win 5434.

The West Memphis girls (13-10 overall, 7-6 in the 6A/5A-3 Conference) missed all eight shots from the floor in the first quarter and Tech (16-7, 11-4) connected on 11 of 18 shot attempts in the first half, taking a 32-16 lead at halftime.

The Lady Devils got within double digits just once from there. A three-pointer from senior Keara Williams, one of three West Memphians to lead the team in scoring with 11 points, and a 15-foot jumper from Takiyah Wesley trimmed what was once a 19-point deficit to 8 (43-35) with six minutes to play in the game.

But Greene County Tech responded with two free throws from Kaylee Edgar, a layup from Kinley Prichard and two more foul shots from Allie Thomas to increase the hosts' margin to 49-35 with 3:53 to play.

Joining Williams with 11 points for West Memphis was seniors Ty Bullins and Tatyana Burks, who scored all of her points off the bench.

Edgar led all scorers with 17 points while Tiffany Gramling totaled 11.
