110- flight tribute honors fallen heroes

Three West Memphis Firefighters attending the 2017 Fire Department Instructors Conference at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, participated in the 9/11 memorial stair climb. Each participant paid tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. The individual tribute not only remembered the sacrifice of a FDNY brother, but it symbolically completed their heroic journey to save others. Lt. Fred Thorn, Lt. Scott Simpson and Firefighter Ashton Heard turned out and geared up to represent West Memphis and in part ensured that each of the 343 fallen New York firefighters was honored and not forgotten.

“It takes a lot of endurance and cardio to make the 110-floor climb especially with firefighting turnout gear and an SCBA on your back,’ Said WMFD Assistant Chief Jeff Jones. “It was an honor to watch these men complete the climb honoring the fallen.”

The stair climb benefited the FDNY Counseling Services Unit to help cover the costs for FDNY families attending Memorial weekend, and also the programs provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to support the families of our nation's fallen firefighters.
