Eye exams and eye surgery can be out of reach for the visually-impaired and the blind. West Memphis Lions Club leader Bert Mc-Cargo is looking for help to keep local assistance available to those in need. Expanding the club roster and moving beyond the annual pancake breakfast to developing donors was at the top of his list. The local chapter chartered in 1946. Mc-Cargo wants to rejuvenate the group which helps with vision needs for the young or elderly.

“This is a way to help and serve folks in this area,” said McCargo. “The need for services in this area include eye exams for those that can’t afford it, assistance for the Little Rock School for the Blind and the Southern College of Optometry, teaching Braille, providing seeing eye dogs, dealing with blindness brought on by diabetes and childhood cancer, and partnering with the Mid-South club to help with eye surgeries.”

The West Memphis group has underwritten thousands of dollars of needs each year. McCargo hoped for the future. Enlarging the club ranks ensures continued giving.

“I would hate to see this die,” said McCargo of the local group.

Needs for assistance are handled by application which starts with a phone call to Brian at 735-0477. Shoney’s hosts the group luncheons on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at noon.

McCargo extended an invitation to everybody and touted an upcoming presentation.

“The Southern College of Optometry is coming January 17 to talk about eye exams.,” said McCargo.
