City set for gravel, asphalt, concrete for 2018

It’s that time that comes but “onest” a year, as local Blues legend B.B. King famously sang.

The West Memphis City Council referred material supply contract bids to the Public Works Committee, which made quick work of its considerations. Up for bid with the city were providing crushed limestone gravel, asphalt, and concrete to the city during 2018.

Mayor Bill Johnson introduced the routine to the city council.

“We have to re-bid them every year,” said Johnson.

“I’d ask that you refer them to the Public Works Committee.”

While not all the suppliers were located in the city, or even Crittenden County, Lafarge, located in West Memphis on Walker Street, was the low bidder for limestone gravel.

Lehman Roberts, located in Memphis ,landed the asphalt supply with the low bid, despite the travel costs.

“Lehman Roberts would be the low bidder even when you factor in the fuel cost?” asked public works chairwoman Ramona Taylor.

“Yes, the fuel, the trip, everything, Lehman Roberts is still cheaper, “ said Public Works Administrative assistant Rhonda Standridge.

Razorbox was the sole bidder to supply concrete to the city for 2018, and was awarded the contract.
