West Memphis Fire Department spends busy Sunday responding to calls

ralphhardin@gmail.com For many, Sunday was all about the big game, but Super Bowl Sunday turned out to be an eventful one in West Memphis, regardless of what the Patriots and the Eagles had going on in Minnesota.

The West Memphis Fire Department had a very busy day. Engine Company 4B and Rescue 1B were called out to the scene of a gas leak on 17th Street early in the day.

B-Shift also had its hands full, working not one, not two, but three fires Sunday afternoon. A structure fire just before the big game came on had fire crews hard at it getting the flames under control.

And while much of the crew was occupied fighting a house fire on South OK Street, Eng. Co-2B, U-15B and U-14B were busy with a blaze of their own, fighting a car fire.

The eventful first weekend of February just picks right up where January left off.

The West Memphis Fire Department answered the call 139 times last month, including more than two dozen fire calls (11 building fires, six cooking fires, six vehicle fires, and two grass fires), as well as five gas leaks, a dozen invalid assists, and a pair of haz- ardous materials calls. Fire crews also responded alongside ALS Ambulance Unit calls on 68 of the department’s 184 ambulance runs.
