Annual Families in Transition fundraiser at the Shake Shack offers good food for a good cause

Families in Transition’s annual Soup Sunday is this weekend. Be sure to set your clocks forward one hour on Saturday night at bed time to be on time for lunch on the first day of Daylight Saving Time.

Loretta at Tacker’s Shake Shack is stirring up some delicious soups and chili to fill bowls benefiting the good cause. She long ago opened the doors to her restaurant on Military Road to support the fight against domestic violence.

“The first several years, I don’t know where they held it,” said Tacker. “Some of the ladies on the committee go to church with me and I heard about Soup Sunday. I told them I’d be willing to open up and let them use my place.”

The fundraiser has become an annual tradition.

“Back then, everybody brought a crock pot and I did not have a place to plug them all in,” said Tacker.

“So, they finally asked me to make the soups. So, I buy all the supplies and make the soups and they reimburse me for the expense.”

It’s a tall order — the number of Soup Sunday tickets sold this year is more than the number of lunch customers for catfish Friday at the Shake Shack.

Side dishes are still made by the friends of Families in Transition. Many look forward to home made cornbread and deserts. The food fare runs from 11 a.m.

to 2 p.m.

Families in Transition has served men, women and children in the county for 20 years providing shelter, safety and assistance to victims of domestic violence. The Crittenden County group began offering services in 1997 and operates a domestic violence hotline 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to empower individuals to break the cycle of domestic violence.

Soup Sunday tickets are available in advance for $8 at the Shake Shack or from any Families in Transition board members, or by calling (870) 732-4077. Tickets at the door on Sunday, March 11, will go for $10.

An extra $2 donation puts ticket holders into a drawing for a Ricky Skaggs autographed guitar or a print and album by the “Red Rocker” himself, Sammy Hagar.
