Food, fun and fireworks highlight Independence Day celebration

ralphhardin@gmail.com Hip-Hop duo Outkast once opined in musical form that “You can plan a pretty picnic but you can’t control the weather.

Well, as it has done quite often over the past few months, it rained last Friday early in the afternoon, but the weather cooperated later in the evening Friday to cool things down and a big crowd gathered in the as the City of West Memphis once again celebrated our nation’s Independence with the return of Freedom Fest at Tilden Rodgers Park.

Visitors had a full slate of activities to keep them busy as they awaited the traditional fireworks show, with plenty of fun for the whole family. The event offered all manner of edible treats, including snow-cones, cotton candy, hot dogs and barbecue.

Vendors were on hand with light-up trinkets, jewelry, and more, and plenty of little live entertainment and, of course, a medley of patriotic fireworks.

The festivities began with the opening ceremonies and the raising of the U.S.

flag atop the West Memphis Fire Department’s 75foot extension ladder. At 9 p.m., the crowd gathered around the lake to watch the fireworks light the night sky. There were oohs and ahhs aplenty as the colorful explosions danced overhead for more than 30 minutes, giving spectators a dazzling light show.

More fireworks are sure to be seen in the night sky around Crittenden County tonight, as residents put on their own shows. Fireworks fans are urged to use caution and stay safe this Fourth of July.
