Local chapter earns awards, works to better the community throughout 2023

From January through December, the ladies of the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

We were honored to serve in the West Memphis community in many different ways,” said Patricia Turner, the chapter’s Ivy Leaf Reporter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.-Pi Chi Omega Chapter received awards at the 91st South Central Regional Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The theme was “Soaring into the Essence of Service and Sisterhood.” Patricia Turner won 1st Place Soror of TheYear for Medium Size Chapters. Turner also received her 50-Year Golden Soror recognition and Felishia Madison received her 25-Year Silver Soror recognition. They were both honored at the Diamond, Pearl, Golden, Silver Soror Luncheon during the conference.

The chapter was also recognized as one of the EAF (Educational Advancement Foundation) Platinum Chapters in the South Central Region and was invited to participate in the EAF Parade during the EAF Luncheon at the Leadership Conference in Chicago, where Awards Chair Emma Milliner Robinson accepted and attended on the chapter’s behalf.

Also, Pi Chi Omega was recognized as one of the “ Best of the Best” Chapters for Programs and for completion of all Chapter Reports. Sharonda Robinson is Pi Chi Omega Chapter President. Joya T. Hayes is South Central Regional Director. Danette Anthony Reed is the International President and CEO of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

The AKAs were making a difference in the lives of local children all year, capping their efforts with Breakfast With Santa on Saturday, Dec. 9. Members of Pi Chi Omega Chapter-Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority greeted 72 students at Jackson-Wonder Elementary cafeteria for a fun-_lled morning of crafts, donuts, juice, music, and pictures with Santa.

Students were grouped in four separate groups according to their grade-level and participated in thirty minutes sessions of fun. As students ate their donuts and drank juice, they listened to Christmas music and decorated their keepsake box, personalizing it as their very own. Students were then escorted to the stage where pictures were taken with Santa.

Following the photo session, students were gifted with a headphone set from the members of Pi Chi Omega Chapter – Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

“Many thanks to our committee chair, Joyce Smith and other committee members Ouida Cunningham, Ebone Allen, Cherith Minnis, Danielle Jones, and Felishia Madison,” said chapter president Sharonda Robinson. “Thanks to all the staff at Jackson-Wonder Elementary who participated in this event. Thanks to everyone who helped to make this event a success.”

The sisters of the Pi Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. spent 2023 in fellowship and in service to the community with a number of gatherings, events and public service efforts.

AKA activities this past year included back-to-school events, food drives, clothing drives and other community-minded efforts.

AKA sisters work closely with each other and local organizations to help those in need.
