What does in mean when it says “general information” in the police reports? There was one in the paper across the street from my work today and I was concerned there might be something going on near me I need to know about for my safety. [ Editor’s Note: I actually asked about this myself once early in my tenure as a staff reporter, as it is quite vague. It turns out that is by design. The “ general information” designation is for any case in which a police officer made contact with an individual but no offical action was taken. It could be in response to a complaint, a concern about a mysterious noise, stopping someone who is walking down the street possibly in need of assistance or up to no good. It’s just an official notice that the police were at that particular location and no one was arrested or charged with a crime… so you’re probably good]

one of the hardest things because your eyes tend to gloss over your own errors. Still, no excuses. I should definitely have caught a typo in a headline for sure. I hope the misspelled word didn’t diminish your enjoyment of the article. I will note that typos are just part of the journalism industry, from a little small- town newspaper to the Wall Street Journal, you can’t catch everything. My personal favorites are the time a pitcher who could throw with either hand being called “ amphibious” and a nutrition article recommending we all eat more “ rapefruit” for breakfast.

Oh, and the details of a court case being a matter of “ pubic” record…]
