Women’s History Month: Cherilyn Minnis

Five decades of teaching the youth of West Memphis

Recently honored at City Hall for Black History Month what better way to begin Women’s History Month than by continuing to celebrate a woman who has taught a majority of West Memphians at one point or another in her over five decades of teaching? Cherilyn Grant Minnis, a dedicated English teacher at West Memphis School District, has taught English at the high school level for over five decades, with twelve years spent teaching 12th Grade AP English. She has also taught 12th Grade “Honors” and “Regular” English, as well as students on all high school grade levels and learning levels throughout her tenure. Her commitment to providing a quality education to her students has earned her a reputation for excellence.

has impacted multiple generations of students, often teaching the children of former students and even their grandparents. Her passion for teaching and dedication to her students knows no bounds, as she strives to ensure that each student leaves her classroom as an enriched learner. She believes in setting high expectations for her students, guiding them to become not only scholars but also confident, respectful individuals.

Mrs. Minnis’s exceptional work has been recognized by the West Memphis School District, where she has been named Teacher of the Year twice. In 2009, she was honored as one of 15 finalists for Arkansas Teacher of the Year. Additionally, she was awarded Teacher of the Year in the Great River Educational Co-Op region, which includes seven school districts. Her outstanding achievements were celebrated at a gala at Governor Hucklebee’s mansion, where she was joined by her family and other finalists. Mrs. Minnis was also acknowledged by State Representative Keith Ingram of Razorback Concrete and Blue Bell Ice Cream Company for her remarkable contributions to education.

For Mrs. Minnis, the greatest reward in her career is seeing her former students succeed and return to express their gratitude. Many of her students have gone on to pursue successful careers in various fields around the world, from Egypt to Spain to China. Their achievements serve as a testament to Mrs. Minnis’s impact as an educator and mentor.

As she continues to inspire and empower the next generation of students, Mrs. Minnis hopes to leave behind a legacy of making a positive difference in the lives of children. Her unwavering dedication to education and commitment to excellence make her a shining example of resilience and determination during Women’s History Month.
