The first signs of spring are in the air as the days become longer, the trees greener and the West Memphis Fire Department doest their annual flushing of the city’s many hydrants.

Hydrant flushing is a process that involves the flowing of water at high volumes to remove sediment and debris from the pipes. This helps to maintain the clarity and quality of the water that is distributed to homes and businesses throughout the city. The flushing of hydrants is carried out periodically to ensure that the water system functions properly.

During the flushing process, water residents may experience fluctuations in water pressure and may even notice discolored

water coming out of their faucets. While the discolored water does not pose a health risk, it is recommended that residents avoid drinking it until it runs clear. However, it is safe to use the water for showering, bathing, and ushing toilets. It is advised not to use discolored water for laundry purposes, as it may stain clothing.

If residents notice discolored water coming out of their taps after hydrant ushing, they are advised to turn on several cold water taps in their home to allow fresh water to ow through the pipes. Running the water for several minutes should help to clear the discoloration and ensure that the water runs clear.

If you see the Fire Department working on a hydrant, please drive carefully and provide the same courtesies you would any other road construction crew.
