HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Jake Henry Williams’ tworun, two-out single in the 14th inning Sunday afternoon lifted Arkansas State to a 6-4 victory over Marshall in the third game of their Sun Belt Conference baseball series.

Batting for the second time this season and the first time in three weeks, Williams hit a 1-1 pitch into left center field to snap a 4-4 tie in the top of the 14th inning. Hunter Draper retired Marshall in order in the bottom of the inning to close ASU’s longest game since an 18-inning victory over Arkansas-Little Rock in 2017.

Sunday’s victory stopped a three-game slide for ASU (1412, 2-4 Sun Belt). Marshall (8-15, 2-4 SBC) took the series by winning Friday’s game 6-2 and Saturday’s game 9-6.

The Red Wolves led 4-1 before the Thundering Herd scored three runs in the ninth to force extra innings.

Draper (2-1) pitched four scoreless innings for the victory, striking out four while allowing two hits and no walks. He escaped a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the 13th to keep the game going.

Daedrick Cail drew a walk to lead off the ASU 14th, then moved to second on Cason Campbell’s sacrifice bunt.

Allen Grier worked a two-out walk and Dylan DeButy was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Williams’ go-ahead single. Dylan Heine started on the mound for A-State, surrendering only one unearned run on five hits and a walk while striking out two over 5 2/3 innings. Blaine Harpenau kept Marshall under control over 2 1/3 innings innings, surrendering no hits or runs while striking out two.

The Red Wolves took advantage of two miscues by the Thundering Herd in the second, with Grier scoring on a fielding error at shortstop.

Brandon Hager recorded an RBI single not long after as A-State jumped out to a 2-0 advantage.

Marshall scored its first run on a throwing error at shortstop in the bottom of the third, but left two on base.

After six scoreless frames, the Red Wolves scored a run on a groundout from Cail as Hager crossed the plate on a fielding error at second base. It was the Thundering Herd’s fourth error of the game as A-State took a 4-1 lead.

AJ Havrilla fired a single into right field to give Marshall its second run of the game in the ninth. A sacrifice fly from Jack Firestone made it a onerun game with only one out on the board and a runner at third.

A sacrifice fly from Kebler Peralta brought in the tying run, making the score 4-4 going into extras.

Hager, Grier and Jayden Hill had two hits each for the Red Wolves. Hager was 7-for-12 at the plate in the series while Grier was 6-for-14.
