Names, charges released in Operation Early Harvest

CONWAY — Authorities have released the names and charges of those arrested during last week’s Operation Early Harvest.

The operation was a collaborative effort of the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office, Conway Police Department, Mayflower Police Department, Arkansas State Police, US Marshals Office and Pafford Medical Services STRIIK Team that resulted in 60 arrests and 110 charges. Of these, 56 were felony charges and 54 were misdemeanor charges, FCSO spokesman Sherry Skaggs said.

Randy Davis, three counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement/ corrections officer, possession of drug paraphernalia and terroristic threatening.

“Some names of individuals taken into custody during Operation Early Harvest have been redacted due to investigatory and other legal reasons,” Skaggs said.

“Additionally, charges are often reduced or dismissed during court proceedings. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”

Sheriff Tim Ryals praised the team for the “very positive outcome for the operation,” during a news conference on Monday.

“I think the people in Faulkner County, surrounding counties and really the state of Arkansas can sleep a little bit better tonight and that’s what it’s all about. That’s what we want to do,” Ryals said. “We stand shoulder to shoulder at the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Department with not just our other law enforcement entities within Faulkner County but our surrounding counties, the Arkansas State Police, our US Marshals and our other federal agencies and we’re very proud to stand side by side with them like we just did.”

Pipe bomb found during traffic stop in Sulphur Rock

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY — According to an affidavit for arrest, law enforcement found a pipe bomb in a backpack during a traffic stop March 23 in Sulphur Rock.

Independence County Sheriff Department deputies and Arkansas State Police found the homemade explosive in a backpack belonging to George Whitman Patterson, 35.

Patterson was a passenger in a SUV when it was stopped by deputies, Patterson, and a woman passenger fled from the vehicle in opposite directions. Deputies chased Patterson and took him into custody about 100 yards away. As deputies took Patterson to the patrol vehicle, the stopped SUV drove away, but was stopped by Arkansas State Police shortly thereafter.

After Patterson’s backpack was seized from the SUV and searched, law enforcement found the pipe bomb. Patterson was interviewed at the Independence County Detention Center by an Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agent and an investigator with the Arkansas State Police. During the course of the interview, Patterson confirmed that he had made the homemade bomb that was recovered from his backpack. The device was identified as an active bomb, and the device was disassembled by the ATF agent and ASP investigator. Bond was set at $20,000.

A warrant was issued March 26 for James Rex Blue, 58.

According to the affidavit for arrest, Blue is being charged with two counts of delivery of a controlled substance, crystal methamphetamine, more than 10 grams but less than 200 grams, a Class Y felony; and maintaining a drug premises within 1,000 feet of a certified drug free zone, a Class B felony. During an investigation by the 16th Judicial District Drug Task Force, investigators purchased meth from Blue at a residence 460 feet from The Sala Evangelica Church on Brooks Street.

Bond was set at $100,000.

A warrant was issued March 27 for Tommy L. Costelow, 55. According to the affidavit for arrest, the 16th Judicial District Drug Task Force searched a home on Oak Grove Road and located eight grams of a crystalline substance that field tested positive for meth, a glass pipe with residue inside and two sets of digital scales with meth residue on them.

Costelow is being charged with possession of a controlled substance, more than two grams but less than ten, a Class B felony; possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class D felony; and maintaining a drug premises, a Class C felony. Bond was set at $25,000.
