Block party takes violent turn over weekend

WYNNE — A man was killed and at least nine others were injured Saturday evening when shots were fired at a block party in Wynne, according to Arkansas State Police.

ASP said in a media release that shots were fired around 10 p.m. at a block party near the corner of Williams Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr.

Street in Wynne.

Also, two of the victims were run over by vehicles at the scene, according to authorities.

ASP said Varian Campbell, 27, of Wynne was pronounced dead at an area hospital. The victims, who ranged in age from 24 to 49, were taken to hospitals in Wynne, Forrest City, Memphis and Jonesboro. One of the victims was taken by helicopter to the Regional One Health Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis.

Campbell’s body has been taken to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock, where authorities will be able to determine the cause of death.

Authorities have several persons of interest in the case and are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the Arkansas State Police Troop D office at 870-9706082.

The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident at the request of Wynne police, officials said.

The investigation is ongoing.
