One man was tragically killed and at least nine others were wounded during a shooting that took place at a block party in Wynne on Saturday night, according to a press release from the Arkansas State Police.

The shooting occurred at approximately 10 p.m. this past Saturday, April 13th at a block party being held near the intersection of Williams Ave. and Martin Luther King Street. The party was being held the same night as Wynne High School’s senior prom.

Varian Campbell, a 27-yearold resident of Wynne and former student of Wynne High School, was shot during the incident and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Sadly, Campbell succumbed to his injuries and passed away as a result of a gunshot wound, as confirmed by Cindy Murphy, the spokesperson for the Arkansas State Police.

Aside from Campbell, nine additional individuals were confirmed to have sustained injuries during the chaotic incident and at least two of the injured individuals were actually struck by vehicles allegedly fleeing at the scene of the shooting. Police said victims were both male and female, with ages ranging from 24 to 49.

Following the shooting, the injured parties were promptly transferred to hospitals located in Wynne, Jonesboro, and Memphis for treatment. Additionally, it is believed that several other injured individuals may have been taken to nearby hospitals in private vehicles.

In response to this event, the Wynne Police Department has formally requested the assistance of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division to thoroughly investigate the incident. It was been mentioned in the release that investigators have already identified several persons of interest that may have been involved in the shooting.

“We extend our deepest condolences and support to our city, which faced a separate tragic event last night. Standing with our community, we offer sympathy and assistance to all those affected. In moments of adversity, it is essential that the strength and compassion of our Wynne community shines through.”

A witness to the shooting said that the party was meant to bring the community together and that the shooting may have been provoked by an argument between two individuals.

The department is urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has pertinent details to come forward and contact Troop D at 870-970-6082.
