Keeping and maintaining a beautiful city is a full-time responsibility that falls not only on the city itself, but its’ residents must also answer the call. With that said the members of the West Memphis City Council and Mayor Marco McClendon will be focusing on several aspects of citywide cleanup in the month of May including lawn maintenance, tree trimming and trash clean-up.

One of those clean-up initiatives is the annual Keep West Memphis Beautiful event spearheaded by City Councilwoman Lorraine Mohammed. Volunteers will meet at the Civic Center at 8 a.m. this Saturday to begin the clean up.

“When started in 2012. we had about three volunteers. Each year that number is different. This year we had nearly 30,” said Mohammed who started the campaign all those years ago, “but we always get the job done, no matter how many we have.”

Kicking off next Saturday the city will be strategically placing several industrial sized dumpsters around town and all citizens are encouraged to take advantage and bring in any unwanted refuse large and small, but with some caveats. Residents are asked not to bring in landscaping materials such as rocks, dirt, concrete, and blacktop and also not to place items on the side of dumpsters or _ll them past the brim.

Dumpster locations will be available at these locations:

■ 200 Bettis St., West Memphis

■ 331 W. Barton, West Memphis (West Jr. High)

■ 3503 E Polk Ave., West Memphis

■ 872 E. Barton Ave, West Memphis (Mayfair Apts)

■ 645 Rice St., West Memphis (Matthew’s Park)

Nearly 30 volunteers from the community participated in last years efforts to keep West Memphis beautiful.
