West Memphis native takes home award for Best Traditional R& B Performance

ralphhardin@gmail.com West Memphis has a long deep-rooted musical history, with many blues and rock & roll legends having played and stayed in the city over the years.

Sunday night at the 61st annual Grammy Awards, there were not one but two West Memphis natives up for the prestigious music awards. Twenty-one yearold Jekalyn Carr was nominated in two categories — Best Gospel Album for her album “One Nation Under God,” and Best Gospel Performance/ Song for her single “You Will Win.” And Abbey Smith, who performs under the name YEBBA was nominated in the Best Traditional R& B Performance for her collaboration with PJ Morton on the single “How Deep Is Your Love.”

While Carr was ultimately beaten out by Tori Kelly and gospel legend Kirk Franklin’s Never Alone” in the song category and Kelly’s album “Hiding Place” in that category, YEBBA (it’s “Abbey” spelled backward, in case you didn’t catch that), was a winner. She and Morton took the stage together to accept the Grammy.

The Grammy Award for Best Traditional R& B Performance is an accolade presented at the Grammy Awards to performers of quality traditional Rhythm and Blues vocal performances.

“How Deep Is Your Love” was originally a pop ballad

Patching Potholes

‘Tis the season — pothole season. An Arkansas Department of Transportation crew worked on some rough spots southbound on Missouri Street Wednesday morning. The work came one day after city councilmen listed potholes in the city as an issue during the West Memphis Public Works Commission meeting.

Photo by John Rech written and recorded by the Bee Gees in 1977 and released as a single and was a number one hit that year.

The cover by Morton and YEBBA appeared on Morton’s album “Gumbo.”

Morton is the piano player for Maroon 5.
