Three Rivers snaps Greyhounds’ winning streak

In a game resembling the last time these two teams played, the Greyhounds just couldn’t hit the shots they needed, falling to the Three Rivers College Raiders 85-79 Monday at The Dog House and breaking ASU Mid-South’s winning streak. ASU Mid-South’s last loss was at Three Rivers in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, where they fell 81-74 in the final minutes before the Greyhounds reeled off nine straight wins.

Both teams battled to a 42-42 tie at the half after Jalen Lynn’s running three-pointer beat the buzzer. In the second half, the Raiders slowly began building a nine-point lead behind three three-pointers and led 62-53 with 12:01 remaining. But the Greyhounds would not go away as they battled back, and a Lynn drive to the basket cut the lead to 69-67 with 4:39 left.

Three Rivers then hit their eighth and final three-pointer for a 7267 lead, but the Greyhounds got a turnover between Kevin Fulton and Jalen Lynn going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe on consecutive possessions to cut the lead to 72-71 with 3:04 left. The Greyhounds, however, could not take advantage, turning the ball over the next possession, and then missing shots on their next two possessions as the Raiders hit free throws to lead 78-71 with 55.3 seconds remaining.

Three Rivers still had to battle for the win as Ike Moore and Jalen Lynn hit consecutive three-pointers to cut the lead to 80-77 with 18.0 seconds left. But the Raiders hit 5-of-6 free throws to finish out the game, and the Greyhounds could manage only two Lynn free throws the rest of the way.

The Greyhounds shot 41.4% from the field to the Raiders’ 44.3%, but Three Rivers went 8-for-19 from the threepoint line while the Greyhounds managed only 4-for-18 from the arc. ASU Mid-South finished with just 14 turnovers to the Raiders’ 17, but Three Rivers dominated the boards, 44-30, including 15 offensive rebounds.

The loss overshadowed another 30-point performance from Jalen Lynn who went 9-of-17 from the field and 10-for-10 from the free throw line to go with a teamhigh 4 assists after missing the last week with illness including Saturday’s win over National Park. Ike Moore and Christian White both scored 12 points each with White pulling down a game-high 8 rebounds.

The Greyhounds (206), currently ranked 19th in the latest NJCAA National Rankings, travel to Southern Arkansas University Tech Saturday for a Region 2 contest in their only road game in February before returning to The Dog House Monday to host fellow Region 2 member University of Arkansas Cossatot.
