ASU Mid-South pushes new semester back one week
New start date for fall 2020 classes announced
asumidsouth.edu Arkansas State University Mid-South has announced a delay in the start date for its Fall Semester classes.
The new Aug. 24 start date allows ASU Mid-South to align with its high school partners in the county, and faculty, staff and administrators additional time to plan for the semester during the national health emergency. This change does not affect students in the Aviation Maintenance Technology program who will begin classes Aug. 17, to meet Federal Aviation Administration requirements regarding minimum instructional hours.
“Earlier in July, Governor Asa Hutchinson and Education Secretary Johnny Key announced the delay of the start of the public school year to the week of August 24th,” noted Dr. Debra West, Chancellor of ASU Mid-South. “Since that time, we have been considering the potential resulting impact on our students. We feel that a start date that coincides with our public school partners is the best way to support our students who are parents of schoolage children and to accommodate those high school students who are concurrently enrolled with us.”
Fall Semester classes at ASU Mid-South will be offered online, on-ground, and in hybrid delivery formats to accommodate program requirements and student interest. Classrooms and common spaces have been modified to provide for the recommended physical distancing, and masks will be required in compliance with the Governor’s mandate. A new Academic Calendar can be found on the ASU Mid-South web site https://www.asumidsouth. edu/academic-calendar/ Regular registration for Fall Semester classes is underway now through Aug. 16, followed by late registration August 17-24.
To avoid late fees, students should register by no later than August 16th. Dr. West emphasized, “as we prepare for the return to campus in this time of uncertainty, we remind our campus community that it takes all of us doing our part to begin moving our state and region in a more hopeful direction. I encourage our campus community to embrace the proven protocols to protect ourselves and others: wash your hands appropriately and often; practice physical distancing (6ft or more) at all times; wear a face covering; monitor your own health; and stay home if you are sick OR if you have been exposed to someone who has COVID19.”
