Scary Movies

It’s October, and of course, the month is capped off with Halloween, so many of us will spend some time in the dark watching scary movies over the next couple of weeks. Yes, the real world is pretty scary right now, so a little escapism into the world of ghosts or masked maniacs or creepy little kids is called for.

I’ve always loved scary movies. I guess I get it from my mother, who introduced me to all the classic Universal Studios monsters back when the “Late, Late Show” was a Friday or Saturday night staple. As I got older, I got into all the “slasher movies” featuring the likes of Freddy and Jason and Chucky. The “Creature Feature” shows were always a favorite too, with various ghoulies and critters and creepers on the loose.

These days, the “smart” scary movies are all the rage.

There’s got to be a mystery and a twist and you have to have good acting and writing. It’s not like when I was a kid and all you needed was a crazed killer with a knife and some scream queen willing to show her boobs before getting sliced and diced. And that’s great for me and my wife, who love a well-made horror film.

So, what’s scary nowadays? I’m not going to even flinch at Michael Myers or the Jigsaw killer. Nope, if you want to scare me now, I need “this could really happen” stories or “maybe demonic possession is real” or “based on a true story” to get me chewing my nails.

For my money, the best scary shows in recent years are “The Conjuring,” “Insidious,” and “The Others.” If you’re looking for a scary TV show, I recommend “The Haunting of Hill House.” Any of these will have you taking your phone with you when you get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.
