Mama’s House

Share

Well, I’m working ahead a little on these columns since I’m on day four of no electricity. I’m being told that the estimated time to have our power on is by 10 p.m. tonight (which is Sunday, FYI), but I’ve driven around my neighborhood a couple of times and I don’t even see a utility truck in the area, so we’ll see.

In the meantime, we’re shacking up at my Mom and Dad’s and I’m not gonna lie, it’s a pretty sweet deal.

Aside from the inconvenience of being away from the comforts of my own home, I’ve got everything I need here… and whatever I don’t have, Mama does her best to make sure I get it.

So far, we’ve had homecooked meals, big fancy breakfasts, a nice big bed to sleep in, and lots of quality time.

In fact, the only drawback is that my Dad still smokes, despite every doctor he has gone to keeps telling him not to. But he’s 77, so I guess he can do what he wants, but now everything we brought over here smells like an ashtray. It’s funny, as a kid, I never even noticed the smell, but now it’s immediately noticeable as soon as you walk in the house.

But it’s certainly better than sitting at home in the dark and the cold. Last time I went to the house (Saturday night to get clothes for church the next day) the thermostat said 46 degrees, and there aren’t enough blankets in the world to make that comfortable.

So, here we are. Hopefully, the “by 10 p.m. Sunday” estimate will prove accurate, but I’m not optimistic.

I better go ask Mama what’s for dinner…
