Saturday, the West Memphis Chamber of Commerce representatives and Mayor McClendon help celebrate their Grand Opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Diabetes Care & Wellness helps manage diabetes and other chronic conditions, such as prediabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), and obesity. West Memphis native and owner Nykkia Sellers is a board-certified family nurse practitioner (NP) with over 20 years of experience. She specializes in the management of diabetes and other chronic diseases in adults. NP Sellers is certified diabetes care and education specialist with board certification in Advanced Diabetes Management.

Diabetes is a serious and costly chronic illness. In 2014, there were almost 288,800 adults in Arkansas with a known diagnosis of diabetes, that’s more than 1 out of every 9 adults in the state. Those with a diagnosis of diabetes have medical expenses that are “approximately 2.3 times higher than those for who do not have diabetes.”

Diagnosed diabetes costs an estimated $3.1 billion in Arkansas each year. The serious complications include heart disease, stroke, amputation, end-stage kidney disease, blindness – and death. An estimated 75,000 adults in Arkansas had diabetes but did not know it. An additional 797,000 adults or more than one-third of Arkansas had prediabetes in 2014.

Diabetes impacts children as well: the American Diabetes Association estimates that “one out of every three children born after 2000 in the United States will be directly affected by diabetes” at some time in their lives.

Diabetes Care & Wellness is located at 700 N. Missouri St. in West Memphis. For information, please call (870) 551-4409 or visit www.mydcwellness.com for more details.
